Embalming (sometimes referred to as “Hygienic Treatment”) is a process used to preserve the body for a longer period of time which is undertaken introducing a chemical preservative through the vascular system.

While extremely useful in some circumstances it is an invasive process and in the UK is only likely to be used when a body is to be kept for some time, when it is to be exported by air or if the coffin is to remain open during a church service.
